The Google Nest Thermostat is a very popular thermostat on the market, and is likely a great choice for people to have at their primary residences. This is a fully functional smart thermostat with lots of great features, supported by Google which is an excellent company.
The biggest drawbacks to this thermostat are the learning features as well as being able to share access of this device with people and external services. Google makes it virtually impossible to share access to this thermostat to other individuals (for example your property manager or neighbor), and they also limit access to the device from third parties.
The learning features really do no good at a short-term rental property either, and in every property where we have had a Nest thermostat, we have disabled these features.
These devices may be one of the only options available for controlling two-wire radiant floor heating systems, so you may want to consider them for that application.
Our recommended thermostat for short-term rental applications is the ecobee Smart Thermostat Essential. Read more about why we recommend the Ecobee thermostat in our dedicated article.
