The Yale Smart Lock with Matter is an exciting new device which Yale released in 2025. We’re big fans of the Yale locks, and really like this new device and the price point (it is currently priced at $189 with discounts down to $149).

Unfortunately, we can’t yet add this to our recommended devices list because the support for Matter Over Thread devices just isn’t there yet. You can read more about that here.

Although we’re not huge fans of the oval design, it is a nice device that offers everything one needs – a keypad with physical (and backlit) buttons, a physical backup key, lots of installation options, 4 AA batteries, etc. The build quality seems good and aligned with what we have come to expect from Yale over the years.

The biggest drawback is that this lock is Matter Over Thread only, and it does not have an interchangeable connectivity module like the Yale Assure Lock 2. This means that it is not as future-proof and you cannot switch out the smart module if you decide to change or upgrade your system later. This lock can only be connected with Matter Over Thread, and although we believe that is going to be the next standard protocol, it is still very early to get involved (and third party API’s for Matter Over Thread devices are still not available).

Overall a nice lock, but as of this writing it is just a bit ahead of it’s time and we wouldn’t recommend getting it for your short-term rental or Airbnb.

Note: Our goal with these device recommendations is to help you get your short-term rental automated quickly, reliably and securely. We want you to use our software, so we have provided these recommendations to help you get started.
